GEORGE LIEURANCE, of Monroe Township, was born in Clinton County, Ohio, in 1825, and resided there with his father until 1836, when the family removed to and settled in Warren County, Ill. He came to Mahaska in 1844, and June 26 of that year was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Jared, born in Kentucky in 1827, being the first couple married in the county. They are the parents of four children: Cynthia L. is the wife of John Witt, and lives in this township; Andrew J. is at Neosha Falls, Kan.; Joseph M. lives in Stafford County, Kan.; Calvin D. is at home. George Lieurance served in the late war for a period of twelve months as First Lieutenant of Co. C, 40th Iowa Vol. Inf., when by reason of sickness he resigned his commission and came home. he is a member of the A. F. & A. M. Himself and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Immediately following his marriage Mr. Lieurance came to Iowa and settled in Monroe Township, this county. His home farm consists of 242 acres of very fertile land, which he has brought to a high state of cultivation, and otherwise splendidly improved. He engages in mixed farming and stockraising, and has prospered exceedingly well in them. He is a pioneer who has grown with the growth of the county, is a man of considerable individuality and force of character, and is deserving of all the prosperity that has attended him in the past, or may fall to his lot in the future. In every respect an estimable citizen, most honorable and of the strictest integrity, he is highly regarded by a very large circle of acquaintances.
